Staff Software Engineer – Cloud Medical Products
bdx · AUT Vienna - Handelskai
Job description
About the role
Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD) is looking for a Staff Software Engineer in Vienna to help shape the next generation of cloud-based medical products for its growing infusion pump portfolio. You will join a multi-functional engineering team building applications on the BD Cloud Platform, working on areas such as drug library software, pump management or pump connectivity. The role provides technical leadership for an entire product or a significant technical capability, guiding architecture and engineering decisions.
Key responsibilities
- Offer technical mentorship and set clear technical direction across application layers and service boundaries.
- Own product-level architecture and major design decisions within BD Cloud Platform constraints, collaborating with platform architects.
- Turn ambiguous product needs into actionable technical approaches, clarifying assumptions and evaluating trade-offs.
- Guide decisions on extending existing applications, creating new components and reusing capabilities.
- Coordinate technical work across teams, resolve integration challenges and build alignment on interfaces and design choices.
- Mentor senior and less-experienced engineers, facilitate design and code reviews, and contribute hands-on to prototypes and critical implementations.
- Partner with Quality Engineers on testability, technical risks and verification approaches, and use approved AI-assisted engineering tools responsibly.
- Apply the Quality Management System, development lifecycle and documentation requirements, and help engineering and product leaders assess technical options and risks.
Required profile
- At least 10 years of software engineering experience, including technical leadership of substantial applications or capabilities spanning multiple teams.
- Experience owning application architecture and guiding complex software initiatives from requirements through implementation and verification.
- Ability to mentor engineers, coordinate across teams and communicate clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Preferred: experience with healthcare or regulated software, Kubernetes, Helm, distributed systems, and the V-model; a master's degree in a technical field is also valued.
Required skills
- Strong software engineering fundamentals and depth in one or more modern programming languages.
- Practical experience with cloud applications, APIs, service integration, containerized software, Git and collaborative workflows.
- Understanding of service-oriented and monolithic architectures, unit testing, automated verification, code review and debugging.
- Preferred: C#/.NET, React/TypeScript, Kubernetes, Helm, requirements traceability and technical risk analysis.
The balance between architecture, coordination, mentoring and hands-on work depends on the assignment, and there is no individual coding quota, production support or on-call duty. The salary range is EUR 77,500 to EUR 124,000 per year.
