Public Information Officer

About the role

The Public Information Officer will join the Social Media Section of the Outreach Division, reporting to the Section Head. Based in Vienna, the incumbent will help shape and execute the Department’s multilingual social media strategy, ensuring alignment with global communications guidance and UN policies.

Key responsibilities

• Implement social media campaigns to promote priority issues and major events.
• Monitor, engage and manage communities on UN global platforms in French, providing daily updates and follow‑up actions.
• Produce and oversee social media assets, from research and audience targeting to drafting content and securing clearances.
• Analyse impact and trends, advising management on agile responses.
• Develop relationships with key constituencies and external partners for special events.
• Serve as the focal point for social media inquiries, offering guidance to senior UN officials.
• Represent the Department at inter‑agency meetings, events and speaking engagements.
• Provide supervision and mentorship to junior staff and interns where required.

Required profile

• Strong knowledge of communications approaches, tools and methodologies for global campaigns.
• Ability to analyse diverse information quickly and identify public affairs opportunities and risks.
• Experience handling sensitive situations diplomatically and cultivating productive relationships.
• Familiarity with UN policies on institutional use of social media.
