Consultant – e‑commerce

About the role

The Office of Legal Affairs is seeking a short‑term consultant to provide specialised legal expertise on UNCITRAL’s e‑commerce texts and support the United Nations’ work on end‑to‑end trade digitalisation and paperless trade.

Key responsibilities

• Analyse and consolidate UNCITRAL e‑commerce texts, incorporating recent proposals and outcomes from the Paperless Trade Colloquium.
• Draft the report for the Commission’s fifty‑ninth session, including guidance material for consistent implementation of e‑commerce legislation.
• Coordinate with UNCITRAL secretariat staff on digitalisation initiatives and ensure alignment of preparatory work.
• Provide technical legal assistance to States and stakeholders engaged in law‑reform processes related to UNCITRAL e‑commerce instruments.
• Support the collection, analysis and dissemination of relevant case law through the CLOUT system, preparing abstracts for publication.
• Contribute to capacity‑building activities such as webinars, training sessions and UNCITRAL Days to promote understanding of the e‑commerce texts.

Required profile

• Advanced legal degree with expertise in international trade law and e‑commerce.
• Experience working with UN bodies or similar international organisations.
• Proven ability to produce high‑quality legal reports and guidance documents.
• Strong coordination and communication skills for interaction with senior legal officers and external stakeholders.

Required skills

• In‑depth knowledge of UNCITRAL legal instruments on e‑commerce and paperless trade.
• Legal research and drafting proficiency.
• Familiarity with the CLOUT case‑law database.
