Local Consultant – Data Analysis Expert on Illegal Mining

About the role

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) seeks a local consultant to lead data‑driven analysis of illegal mining activities and their supply chains in the Brazilian Amazon. The focus will be on cyanide use and the control of heavy machinery in illegal gold mining, delivering actionable insights for UNODC projects.

Key responsibilities

• Map and analytically review existing projects, initiatives, and actions related to illegal mining, identifying gaps, good practices, and lessons learned.
• Participate in meetings, workshops, and focus groups with UNODC teams and strategic partners, providing technical inputs and validating findings.
• Develop two comprehensive technical reports on cyanide use and heavy‑machinery control, incorporating regulatory reviews, institutional data, stakeholder consultations, and geospatial analysis where feasible.
• Prepare a concise factsheet summarising key findings and recommendations for outreach and awareness‑raising.
• Revise and finalise all deliverables based on feedback from UNODC and validation workshops.

Required profile

• Experience in scientific and technical report writing, preferably in environmental or mining contexts.
• Ability to work under the supervision of the UNODC Field Office Representative and coordinate closely with project teams.
• Familiarity with UNODC standards, methodologies, and the objectives of the LEAP and Aurum projects.
