Associate Interpreter – English/Dari/Pashto (Temporary)

About the role

The Independent Investigative Mechanism for Afghanistan (IIMA) seeks a skilled Associate Interpreter to support its language service unit in Vienna. This temporary, full‑time role involves providing high‑quality interpretation for senior staff, civil‑society partners, and legal proceedings related to investigations of serious international crimes.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver consecutive and simultaneous interpretation between English and Dari/Pashto during meetings, workshops, and missions, both on‑site and via remote platforms.
• Interpret confidential statements for criminal‑justice purposes, ensuring accuracy in the documentation of traumatic events.
• Verify verbatim records of interpreted sessions for consistency with original speeches.
• Assist with data collection, analysis, and visualization to support planning and reporting.
• Perform translation tasks when interpretation duties are not required.
• Undertake any additional duties assigned by the Head of the Language Service Unit.

Required profile

• Demonstrated ability to concentrate intensely and provide split‑second accurate interpretation under pressure.
• Professional demeanor with a strong sense of responsibility and confidentiality.
• Experience working in high‑stress environments, preferably within international or legal contexts.

Required skills

• Fluent in English and Dari/Pashto with proven consecutive and simultaneous interpreting experience.
• Familiarity with remote interpretation platforms and on‑site interpretation equipment.
