Senior Backend QA Engineer – Freelancer

About the role

As a Senior Backend QA Engineer (Freelancer) you will ensure the reliability and security of mission‑critical backend systems that power health‑focused products. You will work from Roche's Vienna office, collaborating with global teams in India, Austria and Spain.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build and maintain automation frameworks for REST APIs, microservices and asynchronous message queues.
• Leverage AI tools and large language models to generate synthetic test data and automate test case creation.
• Identify, reproduce and resolve complex distributed‑system issues using deep analytical skills.
• Establish quality metrics (speed, reliability, coverage) and integrate testing into CI/CD pipelines.
• Partner with backend engineers, data teams and product owners to define acceptance criteria and secure end‑to‑end data flows.

Required profile

• 6–9 years of software QA experience, focusing on backend systems and distributed services.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent.
• Strong communication skills and professional proficiency in English.

Required skills

• Java development and test frameworks (RestAssured, TestNG, JUnit).
• API testing tools (Postman) and specification standards (OpenAPI/Swagger).
• SQL and PostgreSQL for data validation and pipeline testing.
• Performance and stress testing tools (JMeter, Grafana k6, Gatling).
• Version control and CI/CD platforms (Git, GitHub, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI).
• AI‑assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT).
• Workflow tools (Jira, Confluence).
• Bonus: AWS, Docker, ISTQB certification, SAFe Agile experience.
