Research Assistant (Temporary)

About the role

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is seeking a temporary Research Assistant to support its Laboratory and Scientific Services Branch in Vienna. Working under the Scientific Affairs Officer (Forensic Early Warning), you will contribute to the collection, analysis, and dissemination of data on illicit synthetic drugs and new psychoactive substances.

Key responsibilities

• Research, extract and compile technical data on illicit synthetic drugs and related topics.
• Enter and maintain data in relevant databases and web‑portals.
• Evaluate chemical data sets for accuracy, clarity and validity.
• Monitor developments by analysing information from scientific journals, databases and the Internet.
• Administer user access and content for the Early Warning Advisory web‑portal.
• Prepare reports, presentations, tables, graphs and social‑media content for senior officers.
• Support administrative tasks such as travel arrangements, vendor payments and event coordination.
• Provide guidance and training to new or junior staff.
• Assist with data visualisation and updating informational materials.

Required profile

• Ability to research, interpret and analyse scientific information on synthetic drugs.
• Basic knowledge of chemistry and related scientific concepts.
• Familiarity with UN internal policies, processes and procedures.
• Attention to detail and initiative in handling data and administrative duties.
