Finance Director – Banking Sector

About the role

An Austrian bank offering retail, commercial and corporate banking services, part of an international financial services group, is looking for a hands-on Finance Director. Reporting directly to the Management Board, the Finance Director provides independent financial oversight and analysis to support the bank's commercial and strategic decisions, strengthens financial reporting, controls and planning, and contributes to capital and balance sheet management.

Key responsibilities

• Lead Accounting, Regulatory Reporting and Financial Control as an integrated function, advise the Management Board independently and maintain segregation of duties and documented controls
• Oversee financial closing, general ledger, statutory statements (Austrian UGB, BWG, IFRS), provisioning and external audit and tax compliance
• Ensure timely financial and prudential returns (FINREP, COREP) and coordinate responses to supervisory requests with the FMA and OeNB
• Lead budgeting, forecasting and management reporting, analyse profitability by business line, product and customer, and evaluate business cases and digital investments
• Partner with Risk and Treasury on capital planning, liquidity forecasts, stress testing and balance sheet scenarios
• Maintain controls over corporate lending, trade and commodity finance, deposits and treasury, and improve data quality, reporting automation and systems integration
• Lead and develop department managers, build succession and communicate with the Management Board, Group Finance, business leaders and external stakeholders

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration or a related field; postgraduate or professional qualification advantageous
• 15+ years of experience, including banking-sector leadership
• Experience with supervisory authorities, external auditors or central banks, and with international or cross-border banking (preferred)
• Fluent English; German is an advantage; commitment to working in Vienna

Required skills

• Bank accounting and IFRS; Austrian UGB and BWG knowledge is a plus
• Capital adequacy, liquidity, risk-weighted assets and balance sheet management
• Corporate lending, deposits and treasury products; trade or commodity finance experience is particularly valuable
• Track record of improving finance processes, reporting systems or data quality
