Senior Product Engineer – Web Services

About the role

Esri builds a geographic information system that helps customers make better decisions through the science of location. As a Senior Product Engineer for Web Services, you will own and guide the evolution of backend services powering in-app and programmatic customer workflows across the ArcGIS platform. This is a senior, product-focused role combining deep technical fluency with strong product judgment, acting as a service owner who shapes priorities and ensures services stay reliable, scalable and valuable.

Key responsibilities

• Own the end-to-end evolution, quality and customer impact of one or more ArcGIS web services, including enhancements, defects, reliability improvements and technical investments.
• Serve as the primary product decision-maker for assigned services, balancing customer needs, platform health and long-term sustainability.
• Define service goals, success metrics and quality standards, using telemetry and customer feedback to guide prioritization.
• Maintain and prioritize a product backlog, making tradeoffs across features, defects, technical debt and operational work.
• Own service contracts, API behavior, versioning and backward compatibility, evaluating downstream impact across the ArcGIS ecosystem.
• Advocate for reliability, performance, scalability and observability, and influence product direction through cross-team collaboration and mentorship.
• Validate and triage enhancement and defect requests with Esri Support Services.

Required profile

• 5+ years of experience in a product-focused role such as Product Engineer, Technical Product Owner, Product Manager or similar.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, GIS, Information Science or another related field.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, able to explain complex concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Ability to work with high autonomy while collaborating across teams.

Required skills

• Agile software development.
• Web services and APIs, including RESTful services, service contracts, versioning and backward compatibility.
• ArcGIS applications and technologies such as ArcGIS Hub, ArcGIS Map Viewer, ArcGIS REST APIs, ArcGIS API for Python and ArcGIS Maps SDKs.
• Cloud-native service fundamentals: availability, performance, monitoring and operational concerns.
• Preferred: reading code in Python, JavaScript, TypeScript and SQL; CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
