Functional Analyst – Payments

About the role

PwC Austria is looking for a technically‑proficient Functional Analyst to join its Payments Technology team. You will be responsible for designing functional specifications and ensuring the integrity of payment processing systems that support card, instant payment, and digital wallet services.

Key responsibilities

• Create clear functional and non‑functional specifications, use cases, and sequence/state diagrams.
• Define API requirements, data mappings and integration points for internal and external systems.
• Configure payment routing, orchestration, fee structures and settlement settings.
• Specify functional requirements for gateways, processors, fraud detection systems and banking partners.
• Develop and execute API, integration and end‑to‑end functional tests, and triage defects.
• Query databases and analyse transaction data using SQL to validate outputs and troubleshoot issues.
• Maintain up‑to‑date technical‑functional documentation and API contracts.

Required profile

• 3–5+ years of experience as a technical or functional analyst focused on payment systems.
• Deep understanding of the payment lifecycle, including authorization, clearing and settlement for cards (EMV), instant payments and tokenisation.
• Experience reading and defining API contracts (REST/SOAP) and working with JSON and XML.
• Proficient in SQL for data analysis and validation.
• Hands‑on experience with API testing tools such as Postman or SoapUI.
• Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities.
